Dear colleagues and community members,
We are delighted to share that the LIBSAFE preservation platform has been chosen as the new technological solution for Harvard Library’s Digital Repository Service (DRS).
LIBSAFE is offered by LIBNOVA, a company focused on digital preservation for academic, research, and cultural heritage institutions.
Harvard Library’s DRS allows for the long-term preservation of the University’s growing digital collections, which include digital objects for research, teaching and learning at Harvard, as well as institutional records. Initiated as a custom system 25 years ago, it has evolved to manage 11 million objects, 234 million files in 90 formats, and 2 PB of data.
The implementation of the updated DRS will provide a solid foundation for achieving the Library’s preservation objectives in research, teaching and learning, as well as for safeguarding its intellectual and institutional legacy.
LIBSAFE was selected for its adaptable model for digital content representation, user interfaces for advanced self-service operations, analysis and reporting capabilities, and integration with other key library systems and technologies.
Harvard Library Technology Services (LTS) will also collaborate with LIBNOVA to deploy two complementary operating modes: a transactional “workspace” for dynamic curatorial processing, and a controlled dark “archive” for long-term preservation management. Material can move back and forth between the two modes as necessary for effective lifecycle stewardship.
